Indoor Sport Court and Entertainment Space Addition
What started as a basketball court addition quickly evolved into something much bigger.
The homeowners originally came to Titus looking for a space where their kids could play basketball year-round. With middle school-aged kids heavily involved in sports, they wanted more than just a rec room.As the homeowners discussed their vision, we both quickly realized that a simple basketball court really wasn’t what they were after. They wanted a destination within the home. A place where their kids and their friends would naturally gather.
As the vision developed, so did the scope of the project.
The completed result is a fully integrated indoor sport court and entertainment addition designed to feel like a natural extension of the home, both architecturally and functionally.
The Ultimate Hangout Space for a Basketball-Loving Family
As the project evolved, the homeowners realized they did not just want a place to play basketball. They wanted a place to play, gather, and relax.
The addition grew to include:
- A mezzanine hangout area overlooking the court
- A U-shaped kitchenette with seating
- A powder room for freshening up
- Oversized glass garage doors open the space to the backyard
The final design creates a strong connection between recreation, entertainment, and everyday family life.
Because the addition connects directly to the home’s lower level, the new space feels less like a separate structure and more like an expansion of how the family already lives.
Designing Around the Existing Home
One of the biggest challenges of this project was the site itself. The home sits on a lookout lot with a recently completed paver patio, which the homeowners wanted to preserve. Rather than forcing the site to adapt to the addition, our design team worked carefully around the existing outdoor spaces and elevation changes to create a seamless transition from the lower level to the new entertainment wing.
The lot shape added another layer of complexity. Because the property narrowed into a trapezoid shape, the addition had to maximize available setbacks to achieve the dimensions needed for a functional basketball court.
Another consideration was the local HOA. Titus proactively coordinated with HOA from the beginning of the design process to help streamline approvals and ensure compliance was met.
All About the Details
Many of the most important design decisions in this project are details most people would never immediately notice. Acoustics, comfort, and durability all became major considerations for this project.
Some of the standout details include:
- Acoustical wood paneling and hidden acoustic elements to help soften noise and improve the overall feel of the space
- Powered shades on high windows to improve comfort and usability throughout the day
- Specialized sport court flooring selected for durability, performance, and comfort under constant activity
- Oversized glass garage doors that connect the entertaining space directly to the backyard
- A mezzanine overlook that creates additional hangout space and a visual connection to the court below
- A moody, layered material palette featuring backlit soffits, textured tile walls, Cambria countertops, and warm lighting throughout
Because this area is directly connected to the house, it was critical to ensure noise wouldn’t carry and create an annoyance. The addition functions as a high-performance athletic space while still feeling elevated, comfortable, and connected to the rest of the home – without the noise of a basketball game audible inside the house.
A Space Designed for This Stage of Life
At its core, this project was never really about basketball. It was about creating memories.
The space is a place for teenagers to gather. A place for friends to come over. A place where recreation, entertainment, and everyday life naturally overlap. A place where memories will form that the family will cherish forever.
What started as an indoor basketball became something much more personal: a place for family connection.
