A well-designed mudroom does more than just give you a place to stash your coats and boots. It creates a transitional space where the chaos of the outside world pauses. Instead of walking into kicked-off shoes and a pile of coats, you walk into a clean, organized space. A good mudroom makes your entire home feel more peaceful and managed. Whether you’re working with a potential space that’s large or small, you can cultivate a balance of serenity and structure by stealing our mudroom ideas.

7 Mudroom Ideas to Steal for Spaces Small and Large

No matter the space you have to work with - whether it’s a large foyer or a converted closet - you can use these ideas to create a great mudroom.

1. Vertical Storage

Even if the available space for your mudroom is large, you’ll likely still feel like there’s just never enough room for it all. One of the best ways to maximize your storage space in your mudroom is to go up, not out. Long & skinny storage areas give you more places to store items like coats, bags, sports gear, and umbrellas. This allows you to create smaller vertical areas for items like shoes that take up less space.

2. Storage for Everyone

While it’s important to maximize your vertical storage options, it’s also important to consider everyone in the home. Prioritize storage options at kids’ heights (or within reach via step-stool if that’s not an option) so they can hang their coats and stash their items as well. Separate hooks, cubbies, and shelves for each person make it easy to keep your mudroom organized. If you want to level up your mudroom even further, you can designate shelves and bins for function (items to take upstairs, items that need to be cleaned, etc.).

3. Built-in Bench(es)

You can maximize your vertical space while also increasing the functionality of your mudroom by being intentional in your design. Built-in benches make it much more comfortable to get shoes on and off. They also help cultivate a welcoming vibe. We typically recommend built-ins vs standalone furniture because you can combine your benches with storage areas above and below for maximum space usage.

4. Bright Lighting

Some places in your home benefit from cozy, ambient lighting. Your mudroom isn’t one of them. This is a space where being able to see clearly is vital for organization and safety. In addition to ceiling lighting, you can integrate shelf lighting and LED strips for the brightest options possible. Depending on the size of your space, you may want to place mirror(s) to help light bounce around the area. These intentional lighting tactics make your space functional, even if there are no nearby windows.

5. Doggy Station

For dog owners, your mudroom also serves as a transitional space between inside and outdoor fun. Adding on areas for your dog(s) makes the process smoother. A dedicated spot for leashes and harnesses helps keep your space organized. Depending on the size of your space, you can also use your mudroom as a feeding station to help cultivate a routine. Dog lovers know - our furry friends are experts at tracking in mysterious dirt and particles. If you have the room for it, adding on a washing station is a great way to help cut down on that mysterious debris making it into the house.

6. Easy-to-clean Flooring and Surfaces

Your mudroom is going to see a lot of mess. With our Minnesota winters, tracking in snow and salt is inevitable. That means choosing the materials for your flooring, walls, and storage is vital for keeping your mudroom clean and fresh. Our design-build team is experienced at choosing the best materials that look great and are easy to clean: making both spot cleaning and deep cleaning a breeze.

7. Smart Decor

No, not smart decor like smart devices: we mean being smart with your decor options! You’ll want to consider both permanent decor like painted shelves as well as temporary decor you can swap out each season. The mudroom is a point of entry for your home. This makes it a great space for some fun seasonal decor. When we design a mudroom, we intentionally place hooks and shelves so that seasonal decor can be swapped around with ease. Rugs are another option that can be swapped out seasonally.

Adding a mudroom to your home seriously upgrades your storage, which in turn makes it easier to stay organized. Whether you’re dreaming up ideas for a future remodel or refining plans that are already in motion, these design tips can help you build a mudroom that’s both functional and beautiful.
